MK Life Tips: Working from Home

Prior to launching my real estate business, I worked remote for a beauty company based out of San Francisco, and flew back and forth every other week or so to San Diego. This then meant that I worked remote at least 2 weeks per month, and did so for a number of years, thus self proclaiming myself as a ‘work from home expert’ :). At first, it was slightly challenging to get the hang of things, but overtime, I created a new schedule that I’ve come to depend on as I continue to work from my home office. In light of the times, see below my quick list of tips to support those of you who are experiencing the transition from the office to home.

1. Develop a routine

This goes without saying, but I want to dive into this a bit more. Since most people generally work best if they have an expected schedule set before them, it is important to establish what this looks like for you. The results? You’re more focused, productive, and can stay on target to accomplish all that the day brings. For me, this includes waking up at the same time every day, supporting myself first with a morning routine (see more on that here), then getting dressed out of my pj’s (clean pj’s or workout clothes work;)), and then creating my to do list. For your to do list, this can include personal errands, household chores and work, as this is the beauty of working from home. You’ll want to divide things out into four different categories to allow you to prioritize and get the most done, while remaining calm and present:

  • Urgent and Important

  • Not Urgent and Important

  • Not Urgent but Important

  • Not Urgent and Not Important

2. Creating a sacred space

Not only is this a good idea for your body to remain comfortable and in a healthy position while working - considering most of us will be on the computer majority of the day - but also to keep distance between personal life and work life. I am lucky enough to have a dedicated office, but if you don’t, I highly recommend finding a place where you can leave your work space behind. Also, a spot where you can add post its of inspiration, pictures of family, a candle, maybe some crystals if you’re woo like me ;). Creating something that is personal, that you look forward to visiting, but can also separate working hours from the rest of your life.

3. Sourcing supportive resources

While working, I’ll listen to a podcast, audible book, relaxing music, or even a high vibe frequencies on youtube. This keeps me feeling upbeat while I tackle through my to do list, and makes you feel less alone. Some of my favorite books and podcasts are listed below.

4. Make connection a priority

This one took me awhile to learn. When working for the company out of San Francisco, I had meetings legit all day ery day, so I was able to connect with others, and feel less alone. After becoming a solopreneur, I realized that I could go days not talking to others, and then end up being that annoying person at the grocery store when asked, “how are you'?” Responding with a long ass, unsolicited answer :) To avoid looking like a crazy, schedule virtual meetings, lunches and coffee dates. Connect over the phone at minimum once per day, and you will see a huge shift.

5. Schedule breaks

This one was also challenging for me at first, but I am 10000% more productive when I take breaks throughout my days, and it is also important to move your body. Every hour or so, I’ll get up and walk around my house, complete a quick chore (15 minutes or less) or get outside for a quick walk around the block. The act of moving really makes a difference, and allows me to reset and finish the rest of the tasks at hand.

6. Treat yo-self

Since you are riding solo, it is important to be your biggest cheerleader when you accomplish a task or obstacle you’re facing whether work or personal related. Literally pat yourself on the back (we learned this at Tony Robbins, LOL) and make yourself your favorite cup of tea, give yourself 10 minutes of scroll time on instagram, or dance to your favorite song. These small ways of showing appreciation for yourself can go a long way, and also keep your vibes high.

7. Adapt

This might be a completely new experience for you, and you will learn over time what works and what doesn’t. Be open to the discomfort of the change for the moment, and give yourself grace as you determine how best to work from home. Remember that only you know what works best for you, but my hope is this guide gave you some inspiration or insight into what direction to move forward in.

Sending light and love to all of you!
