MK Life Tips: Tips for the Perfect Family Photo

As a gift to my clients this year in lieu of my appreciation party, I’m offering a complimentary family photoshoot at one of my favorite spots in La Jolla, Windansea. The photographer will be none other than the amazing Rachael Consaul who has shot all of my branding photos, and some family shots too over the past few years. If you’re looking for someone to take photos of you for business, personal, or family, I highly recommend her. She is so talented and fun to work with!

For this gift, I wanted to give my clients something that can be put to good use whether it ends up in a frame on the wall, in their Holiday cards, or on their social media profile. In preparation for this, I thought it would be helpful for anyone (not just those attending the event) to get some tips to ensure your family photos turn out just as you’d like it. For a full rundown, checkout my list below.

1. Color coordinate

I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of photos of family in all denim from head to toe, or in matching shirts, and while I’m not against this approach (you do you), there is a more sophisticated route that which will make the photos vibe, while being able to express your individuality. This is about setting a ‘color palette’ so that everyone will compliment each other, but will look and feel their best. You can also go ‘monochromatic’ as my family did above, wearing various shades of light blue and white. For a guide on some color palette options, see below to give you ideas on colors that photograph well together.

Some other clothing tips include:

  • Opting against heavy prints and patterns and shirts with big logos.

  • Dark clothing tends to slenderize.

  • Light clothing can look beautifully fresh

2. Plan your outfits in advance

Even though this will be a no fuss deal and I’ve organized all the details for my clients, this is still and important point. I know life can be busy, but I would suggest setting up your outfits a few days in advance as it will make life a lot easier and more enjoyable day of. Especially if your clothes need to be prepped (cleaned, dry cleaned, new buttons, ironed, etc.), this will give you space if you need to prepare a backup plan. This includes shoes, accessories, perhaps that lipstick that you have no clue where it is … lay it out, all ready to go, so you have plenty of time day of.

3. Check your intake

A few days leading up to the photo shoot, I would suggest increasing your water intake, and decreasing any foods with heavy sodium. To ensure you’re looking and feeling your best day of.

4. Eat ahead of time

Showing up to the shoot on an empty stomach will not be an enjoyable experience, so can we skip that part please? I know it is slightly an odd time for the event, but it is when the lighting will be the best. Make sure to have a snack or bring some along with you so that you’re not distracted with a hungry stomach.

5. Have fun

Most important of all, I want you to have fun! All of my clients are so beautiful on the inside and out, so I wanted to capture this essence through photography, so that you can see what I see. Show up with ease, and know that all has been handled.
